Congressman Praises New York's Water Contaminant Standards, Wants Action From EPA

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - New York 19th District Congressman Antonio Delgado is praising new standards placed by New York on contaminated water.

Earlier this week, the state claimed it will set the nation's lowest allowable level for industrial chemicals already found in the drinking water of some New York communities.

"The MCL set by New York State reflects the reality of these harmful chemicals in the drinking water and these actions are important steps to ensure New Yorkers know what is in their water—it is time for the EPA to follow suit,” Delgado said in a statement.

The new state limit is 10 parts-per-trillion for PFOA and PFOS in drinking water. That’s 60 parts-per-trillion lower than the EPA’s cap. PFOA was used in non-stick coatings and PFOS was used in fire-fighting foam.

Delgado's district includes areas, like Hoosick Falls, that have dealt with water contamination issues in recent years.

The state is making $350 million available to help several communities make clean water improvements. That includes the Village of Endicott, outside of Delgado's district, which is receiving $30,000 for an emerging contaminants water system study.

Delgado's district includes Delaware, Otsego and part of Broome Counties.
