A rally was held in downtown Ithaca on Sunday to show support for Jane Doe, a former Cornell student who sued the university over allegations that she was raped by seven fraternity members in 2024. The crowd was overwhelmingly made up of women from different generations.

Aaron Gies, the Democratic Party and Working Families Party candidate for New York’s 23rd Congressional District (NY23), said he is not familiar with the details of the Cornell University alleged sexual assault case filed by “Jane Doe” on Sept. 14, but he is open to reviewing Title IX if elected in November.

The proposed bills would address what some call loopholes in the law that prevent victims who voluntarily consumed drugs or alcohol from seeking justice.

On Wednesday, the university removed a sentence stating that campus police “shared all investigatory information with the Tompkins County District Attorney's Office.”

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa have re-introduced a bill that would change the way colleges and universities handle sexual assaults that occur on their campuses.
