Parts of the village of Newark Valley experienced serious damage from flash flooding Sunday night.

Heavy rain already caused flash flooding in Tioga and Broome County last night. The Newark Valley area was especially hard hit, with flooded streets and washed out roads. The Newark Valley High School is open for residents in need of shelter. Owego Church of the Nazarene has also opened a temporary shelter for people displaced by the flooding.

As of 9:30 p.m. Monday, the towns of Canisteo, Bath, Cameron, Urbana, Pulteny, and Wayne were all under states of emergency. On Tuesday morning, the county lifted the emergency travel advisory, but officials are encouraging residents to be cautious when traveling. A travel advisory will remain in effect.
