Bach in Bengal - A Dialogue of Counterpoint and Raga
Bach in Bengal - A Dialogue of Counterpoint and Raga
The Fenimore Chamber Orchestra presents "Bach in Bengal," a groundbreaking orchestral program that explores the shared principles of Baroque counterpoint and Indian classical raga. This concert features an integrated artistic exchange between the orchestra and two internationally renowned soloists: sitarist Arjun Verma and tabla virtuoso Naren Budhakar.
Under the "outside-the-box" leadership of Artistic Director Maciej Zoltowski, the program examines the connections between the architectural clarity of J.S. Bach and the disciplined, expansive framework of Indian music. Highlights include the "Indian Baroque Suite," a work that weaves Indian ornamentation into the music of Baroque masters, and "Variations on a Bach Bourrée," a unique collaboration inspired by the legendary Ali Akbar Khan—often called the "J.S. Bach of the East".
This performance serves as a special homecoming for Arjun Verma, who grew up in Oneonta, NY, and was trained by his father, the late maestro Roop Verma. The project honors Roop Verma’s 40-year legacy of bringing Indian classical music to the Upstate New York community. Join us for an afternoon of substantial artistry, cultural exchange, and true orchestral collaboration.
