"Carrie: The Musical," based on Stephen King’s classic novel, arrives at the SUNY Cortland Performing Arts Department this fall. Directed by Deena Conley and music direction by Ben Kapilow, the production follows Carrie White, a bullied high school student whose telekinetic powers erupt in devastating fashion on the night of her senior prom. The musical blends a rock-infused score with a story of isolation, cruelty and the search for belonging. Performances take place in the Dowd Fine Arts Center’s Lab Theatre, an intimate space that puts audiences close to the action. The production runs Oct. 30, 31 and Nov. 5-7, with matinees Nov. 1 and 8.
"Five Women Wearing the Same Dress," Alan Ball’s comedy of manners, comes to Cortland Repertory Theatre Downtown this spring, presented by the SUNY Cortland Performing Arts Department. Directed by Adara Alston, the play gathers five bridesmaids in a bedroom upstairs from a wedding reception they would rather skip. As the party rages on below, the women trade secrets, grievances and unexpected friendship, each dressed in the same unflattering bridesmaid gown. Ball’s script, from the writer of "American Beauty" and "Six Feet Under," balances sharp comedy with genuine warmth. Performances take place at Cortland Repertory Theatre Downtown, Feb. 25-28.

The Vestal Museum will be exhibiting NYS Governor's Election Buttons from 1898 until Today. This vast collection belongs to retired educator and local community leader/volunteer, Michon Stuart. The Vestal Museum will host an Opening Reception August 28th from 1-3pm and a brief lecture/tour of the collection on October 4th from 1- 2pm. Admission is always free. We are open year round Wednesdays from 9-1, Thursdays 5-9pm, Saturdays 9 - 3 and Sundays 12 - 4.

After moving to NYC thirty years ago, saxophonist, composer and educator David Bixler cut his teeth touring the world with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Toshiko Akioshi. He later joined the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Big Band with whom he played a decade-long residency of Sunday evenings at Birdland and won a Latin Grammy for the recording, “Final Night at Birdland.” Bixler has recently embarked on a prolific artistic reemergence marked by a series of diverse recordings including In the Face of Chaos (2019) with Bixler, Boccato, Cowherd and Sturm, Blended Lineage (2020) with the Bixtet and Inside the Grief (2020) with trio incognito. His latest project, The Langston Hughes Project vol. 1, features music inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes.Bixler is the host of Liner Notes with David Bixler, a podcast centered on conversations with jazz musicians. He also serves as Director of Jazz Studies at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH.
