Mauro Marinelli became a Photographer because he couldn’t draw, not a lick. The camera allowed him access to a life in art. But he still had this undeniable urge to paint.While living in NYC he frequented MOMA almost weekly.There was one grand room or space with pale grey walls that he had often rushed through. On one occasion, on one fated day, he paused, and stopped in the THAT room. And was granted his wish to paint. The room of Malevich, Mondrian & Theo Von Doesburg. They spoke to him. They touched him with the awakening stick of enlightenment.
Ceramic artists Michael and Laura Dale George are thrilled to announce their work will be exhibited in "Geometric Abstractions" at the Gallery at South Hill. Together for eight years, this is their first collaboration on a full series of pieces, which explores the interplay of mathematical precision and the organic implications of clay worked by human hands. The work invites you to search for symmetries and emergent patterns in the handmade interlocking geometrics. Pieces on display explore the themes of vulnerability and guardedness, and draw inspiration from kusudama, platonic solids, Celtic knotwork and ancient armor.
The Friends of Music of Stamford, NY 40th Anniversary Season continues on Sunday, May 17, with a 3 pm concert by the internationally acclaimed Hermitage Piano Trio. Featuring Misha Keylin (violin), Sergey Antonov (cello), and Ilya Kazantsev (piano), the Hermitage Piano Trio has solidified its place as one of the world’s leading piano trios, garnering multiple GRAMMY® Award nominations and receiving both audience and high-profile press accolades for their performances.
A rarity in the chamber music world, this elite Trio brings together three accomplished soloists in their own right. Violinist Misha Keylin has performed in 45 countries across five continents. Hailed as “a brilliant cellist” by the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich, Sergey Antonov went on to prove his mentor’s proclamation when he became one of the youngest cellists ever awarded the gold medal at the world’s premier musical contest, the quadrennial International Tchaikovsky Competition. Pianist Ilya Kazantsev has performed as a recitalist and a soloist with orchestras in Russia, Canada, Europe, and the United States; his many awards and honors include first prize at the Nikolai Rubinstein International Competition (France) as well as top prizes at the International Chopin Competition (Russia) and the World Piano Competition (USA).
This event is generously hosted by the First Presbyterian Church at 96 Main Street, Stamford, NY. Admission is by donation at the door; the suggested donation is $15 per person, $10 for seniors & students. There is no charge for those under age 13. The Mentor-Student Program seeks volunteer mentors to work one on one with school-age students of various ages who benefit from having a positive adult role model in their lives. This opportunity involves training, support, and meeting with your student twice a week after school. The Newfield Historical Society's Annual Meeting is at Newfield Fire Hall on Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. featuring a talk “Teaching the Declaration of Independence” by Tompkins County Historian Charley Githler. Free and open to the public and refreshments will be provided.
