Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency this week in response to the measles outbreak across rural areas of New York including the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions. The declaration comes as Steuben County reported its 17th case on Tuesday.

A press release from the Chemung county executive on Monday stated the health department is investigating one confirmed case of measles in an unvaccinated person who began showing symptoms on Sept. 3.

On Tuesday, the Steuben County health department reported its 10th measles case in an unvaccinated resident.

A total of four unvaccinated residents have tested positive for the virus in Tioga, Steuben and Otsego counties. Cases have also been reported in Seneca, Madison and Allegany counties.

The cases come less than a week after a resident in Tioga County tested positive for measles.

Parts of the region could see a total of between six and 12 inches of snow Friday night into Saturday morning. A state of emergency is in effect in Broome, Otsego, Delaware, Chenango and Cortland counties.
